By Tom Housenick, For The Sun-Gazette
BETHLEHEM - Leroy Harman found a quiet spot in Freedom High School's gym, trying to relax before his Northeast Region Class AAA quarterfinal bout Friday night.
That was hard for the Williamsport 125-pounder to do in the heart of wrestling in eastern Pennsylvania.
Turns out Harman was the only Millionaire to survive the winners' bracket on the first day of the tournament.
The Williamsport sophomore made quick work of Parkland freshman Mike Marano, decking him in 1:06 to advance to today's semifinals.
Jersey Shore's Cody Mason will give Harman some local company, winning his 285-pound quarterfinal by fall.
Action resumes today with first-round consolations at 9:30 a.m. Consolation finals are set for 5 p.m., followed by championship matches at 6:30. The top three at each weight advance to next weekend's state tournament.
Williamsport teammate T.J. Tressler trailed Wyoming Valley West's Kyle Krasavage 7-2 before being disqualified in the 103-pound quarterfinal at the 5:34 mark.
Jersey Shore's Cody Ulmer (125), Kelob Herman (130), Dylan Shields (145) and Taylor Stabley (171) all came up short in the quarters.
Williamsport's Steffen Yaskoweak (112) and Jersey Shore's Dalton McLaughlin (119) lost in the preliminaries and fell into the consolation bracket.

Lewisburg Outlasts South, Advances to States |

Milton -- For both the Lewisburg Green Dragons and South Williamsport Mountaineers, it was a battle for survival with the winner advancing to the PIAA tournament, while the loser could only pack it in until next season.
When the issue was decided, Lewisburg was the survivor while South Williamsport came out on the short end as the Dragons outlasted the Mounties by the final of 34-29 in a District 4 Class AA consolation game.
From the opening tip, the two teams played their version of banana ball by scoring in bunches.
First there was five straight points by Lewisburg to open the game, then came 13 in a row by South.
“We came out and did pretty much what we wanted to do,” explained South head coach Matt Fisher. “But in the second quarter, we had some untimely turnovers that cost us and we also went away from a couple of things that were working for us and that might have been a tribute to their press.”

MILTON -- It was a beautiful sun-drenched day outside the Milton High School gymnasium, but inside the complex, the tornado winds were gusting.
Coming out of the locker room at the outset line a set of gangbusters, the Mount Carmel Lady Tornadoes scored the first 23 points of the game as they cruised to a 52-32 win over the Troy Lady Trojans (13-11) in a District 4 Class AA consolation game.
“We thought our guards were quick and we felt we could get out on them (in transition),” said Mt. Carmel coach Lisa Varano. “We have a lot of very athletic people on our team and with that, we felt we could also come out and press them into making mistakes so that is kind of what we went with.”
While Varano was happy with the win and the way her team performed, Troy coach Erik Marhefka felt that his team was hit squarely in the face by Murphy’s Law.

WILLIAMSPORT -- The only way to spell the performance of District 4 in the first night of competition in the PIAA Northeast AA Regionals is D-O-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N.
When the first round was completed and the results were in the books, District 4 had come up with 49 winners in 56 bouts, the other seven wins obviously going to District 2 of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area.
Although team points don’t mean much after just one round of wrestling, here are the top 10 teams with the number of semifinalists in parentheses:
1. Benton (6) 20, 2. Athens (5) 16, 3. Muncy (4) 13, 4. Montoursville (4) 12.5, 5. Warrior Run (3 ) 12, 6. Towanda (3 ) 11.5, 7. Shamokin (4) 11, 8. Lewisburg (3) and Wyalusing (3) 10, 10. Line Mountain (2) and South Williamsport (3) 7.

Lyco men open NCAA tourney play tonight |
|
|
|
|
Friday, 05 March 2010 12:13 |
By Brett R. Crossley, For The Sun Gazette
It wasn't the way it was supposed to end for Lycoming, on its home court and in front of its fans.
The Warriors just six days removed from a loss to Albright in the Commonwealth Con-ference championship game will get a second chance tonight in the NCAA Division III tournament after earning an at-large bid.
Lycoming (21-6) will open tournament play tonight at 5:30 against Wilmington at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va.
"We've learned not to take big games for granted," said junior Will Kelly, who posted a team-high 18 points in the Albright loss. "Opportunities like this don't come often, so we need to take advantage of it."
Opportunities to compete in the NCAA tournament don't come often at all for Lycoming. Friday's game against Wilmington will only be the fifth time in school history the Warriors reached the NCAA tournament.
"You think it's all said and done," senior Eric Anthony said, "but then you see that all the hard work thoughout the season pays off. I'm just excited to be playing with my teammates again."
Anthony, who is averaging 15.4 points per contest, has been a rock for the Warriors offensively. Along with hitting the game-winner against Widener to give Lycoming the top spot in the Commonwealth tournament, Anthony scored 19 and 12 points, respectively in the Warriors two posteason contests.
"We need to just keep doing what we're doing," Anthony said.
Wilmington (21-7), winner of the Ohio Athletic Conference, will be competing in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in school history. Wilmington earned its trip by routing Heidelbery 82-69 at John Caroll University.
"Preparation is the best way we can make the most of this," Lycoming coach Guy Rancourt said. "The team has been working hard and their focus has been good."
