Crosscutters Ambush Jamestown for 12-10 Win PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 August 2010 22:55

By BILL ALBRIGHT
ESPNWilliamsport.com Senior Writer

If there is such a thing as a safe lead in the game of baseball, don’t try and sell that bill of goods to the Jamestown Jammers.crosscutters

Holding what seemed to be a comfortable 9-2 lead over Williamsport in the sixth inning, the Jammers saw the Cutters scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth before they added three more in the eighth to post an almost unbelievable 12-10 win Monday night before 1,176 fans at Bowman Field.

“This win makes a big difference in where we are going into tomorrow,” said Cutter manager Chris Truby. “If we would have lost that last game in Batavia or this game tonight, it might have taken some air out of us. There is always the excitement of the win and the kids look forward to coming to the ball park the next day, energized by having the opportunity to get into the playoffs. It is fun to watch these kids go because it is a good experience for them.”

EXCLUSIVE: Dixon takes LHU athletic reigns PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 27 August 2010 15:21

from ESPNWilliamsport.com

staff reports

LOCK HAVEN - ESPN Radio Williamsport has confirmed through Lock Haven University Director of Marketing and Communications Mary White, that Dr. Barbara Dixon, LHU interim President has taken the reigns of the Athletic Department.

Dr. Dixon will now have direct oversight of everything in the Athletic Department. This reporting line responsibility has been held recently by William T. Hanelly, Vice President, Finance, Administration and Technology and Dr. Deborah Erickson, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

According to White, "from time to time we adjust lines of reporting for greater efficiency in university operations."

An e-mail was distributed by Dr. Dixon this afternoon noting the change.

More details to follow on this developing story.

UPDATE: Saturday, August 28, 2010, 11:00 a.m.

LOCK HAVEN - ESPN Radio Williamsport has obtained the e-mail that was distributed by Dr. Dixon on Friday.

According to the e-mail, Dr. Barbara Dixon states, "I have concluded that it is in the best interest of the university to move athletics under the President’s office so that the provost can focus her attention on issues more central to academic affairs. This change should be smooth, and I suspect most of you will not notice any difference in your day-to-day activities. Any personnel action/evaluation for the three administrators who hold faculty status will still go through the Provost’s Office. In all other aspects, the department will report to the President."

There was then a follow-up e-mail from John C. Cavanaugh, Ph.D., Chancellor, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education stating the following, "Thank you for the update. We will make the appropriate notations on our org charts."

ESPNWilliamsport.com and ESPN Radio Williamsport will continue to monitor events as this story continues to develop.

String of lawsuits hurts ‘The Haven,’ its students, mission PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:24
courtesy: www.lockhaven.com -  POSTED: August 25, 2010

We have often thought how appropriate and smart that Lock Haven University call itself "The Haven" when recruiting students interested in attending the 140-year-old, state-run university in this rural community on the hill overlooking the Susquehanna River.

We like "The Haven" and the idyllic "town-gown" image it creates. It brings to mind a "safe place," an image parents certainly will regard when their kids make choices about where to go to school. Plus, the college has a number of very strong and widely recognized programs, among them education for producing well-qualified school teachers.

Colleges go to great lengths to protect and build their images, their integrity as institutions of higher learning.

And so they should.

But clearly, The Haven has a people problem.

Internal strife is affecting its image.

The latest in a parade of lawsuits makes that very, very clear.

There is an antagonistic atmosphere on the campus of this institution.

At the heart of it all is the athletics department and a string of lawsuits in recent years.

Ms. Sharon Taylor is among a handful of state-run university athletic directors and assistants who recently filed a suit against the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and their union, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, alleging they are owed millions of dollars for unpaid work hours and pension contributions.

TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME

By Allie Weinberger, Mark Rogoff and Mark Price

WILLIAMSPORT, PA -- The West region champions from Waipio Little League in Waipahu, Hawaii had a long way to go to get to South Williamsport, Pa. In fact, five little leagues in the international bracket had a shorter distance to travel than the representatives of the US West. That leaves just three teams further away than Hawaii’s 4,806 travel miles.

But more than just distance affects these Little Leaguers and their families back at home. These kids and their managers haven’t been back to The Aloha State since August 4, and they won’t be going home soon either, if they can help it.

“We left Honolulu and went to California [for the regional] and we didn’t go back,” said manager Brian Yoshii. “I didn’t get to go home [before coming here].”

WILLIAMSPORT, PA -- During last night's Crosscutters game the radio broadcast crew covering the team from Panama in the Little League World Series joined the broadcast with Gaspar Reyes, Rafael Velado and Ovidio Gonzalez announcing both starting lineups in Spanish.

The favor was returned earlier this afternoon prior to the Panamania game against the team from Middle East and Africa. ESPN Williamsport General Manager Todd Bartley is shown in the photo (above) announcing the lineup with Ovidio Gonzalez holding the microphone.

According to Bartley, "It is an absolute career highlight to share in this experience with other broadcasters from around the world. It is obvious visiting with Ovidio and the guys they are passionate about broadcasting and a genuine love of the game of baseball as well as kids and giving them a great experience by broadcasting the games back to fans in Panama. I look forward to seeing them back at the Little League World Series in years to come."

ESPN Radio Williamsport would also like to extend a thank you to Paul Velte owner of the Williamsport Crosscutters, Chris Miner host of the Panamanian broadcast crew as well as Crosscutters.com writer John Vitale and his friend Manny for translating.

WILLIAMSPORT, PA -- Replay has been expanded for this year’s Little League Baseball World Series and it’s already gotten quite a bit of use. In Saturday’s contests alone, four challenges were issued by managers in different games.

And so far, its coaches-3, call on the field-2. Three of the four Saturday challenges were successful in reversing the call on the field, improving on an 0-for-1 mark from Friday’s contests.

Calls were reversed in both Saturday’s opening and closing games, with the first-ever reversal under the new replay format occurring in the early game between Hamilton, Ohio, and Toms River, N.J.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mid-Atlantic’s Jeff Ciervo sent a ground ball to Hamilton third baseman Brooks Robinson. First base umpire Ken Garrison called Ciervo safe, saying he beat Robinson’s throw. But the play was reviewed, and replay showed Ciervo was out.

The replay was completed quickly and Robinson said he didn’t feel like the flow of the game was interrupted.
